Basic Training Information for LPG
Liquid petroleum gas or LPG is a colourless and odourless fuel derived from natural gas. LPG contains 90 percent propane. It is extracted in a process known as distilling.
Considerations
LPG gas should be handled with care to prevent potential fires and explosions which take place with the improper maintenance or installation of gas lines. LPG domestic appliances require proper maintenance and installation in order to prevent mishaps.
Prevention
For anybody working directly with liquid petroleum gas, accident prevention training is important. Included in training should be proper methods for refueling and methods for checking for leaks. Training should also consist of knowing how to wear personal protective gear and being alert to dangers such as loose fittings or damaged hoses.
Emergency Preparation
Liquid petroleum gas is a volatile fuel and anyone working with it should be knowledgeable about emergency procedures to follow in the event of explosion or fire. Training should include gas leak control, first aid and evacuation.
Fuel Storage
When storing tanks from the large refueling tank or a small fuel canister, one must secure a safe site away from buildings. Warnings of no smoking must be posted. To ensure tanks are just accessed by authorized employees, the tanks should be locked in a secure enclosure which is designed to be protected from vehicle impact. Concrete bumpers or other retaining systems are better. The fueling station must have an accessible fire extinguisher. Only people trained to utilize the fueling station must be permitted to do so. Personnel also should be trained to utilize the fire extinguisher.
Operator Training
HRSDC and OSHA require that operators undergo training consisting of in-class, hands-on and practical training. Trainees would be tested to make certain that they know the safety problems involved in using a forklift.
